FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Phone: (646) 248-8831
WHAT: NYC’s leading tobacco control advocacy nonprofit, NYC Smoke-Free at Public Health Solutions, will honor Frances Maturo of the Throggs Neck Community Action Partnership for leadership in helping to lower smoking rates in the Pelham-Throggs Neck section of the Bronx. Her contributions include community education and youth engagement regarding tobacco as well as implementing an organizational smoke-free grounds policy to protect employees and patrons from secondhand smoke.
For the first time in nearly a decade, New York City has more than one million smokers. Thanks to efforts by Ms. Maturo and tobacco control advocates, there has been a 45% decline in the proportion of adults living in the Pelham-Throggs Neck area who are smokers, from 2003-2013, according to the latest available data from the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. World No Tobacco Day is an international day of celebrating tobacco control in local communities and bringing awareness to the global tobacco epidemic.
