Bronx, NY -  On March 23, 2016, AMSU student leaders from NYC Smoke-Free at Public Health Solutions will be hosting a Kicks Butts Day event during the school assembly. Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. There are over 1600 tobacco retailers that populate our Bronx communities. This growing number of tobacco retailers in our neighborhoods re-normalizes tobacco use. And in far too many communities, youth are more likely to find tobacco on their neighborhood blocks than parks, schools, libraries, or toy stores.

By raising awareness of the problem of tobacco exposure around our home and school communities we are encouraging students to be more aware of and stand up against Big Tobacco. During the assembly students will host a presentation around the program and highlight the tobacco density concerns in the neighborhood. Five students within the school will also participate in an “Open Mic” event. They will get the chance to stand up against Big Tobacco through an art form whether it is a poem, song or display an art work. For further information regarding this March 23rd event, visit: www.amsu.org/students/events/Kick-Butts-Day.
