Utilizing outreach, education, advocacy, partnership and communication, NYC Smoke-Free actively engages community members and key stakeholders ( local community boards, community based organizations, and influential decision makers) to support the prevention and reduction of tobacco use. NYC Smoke-Free’s mission is to end the tobacco epidemic and promote a tobacco-free society that benefits the health of all New York City residents. Our mission is realized by encouraging change at the community level by supporting collaborative neighborhood-based efforts, which are key to ensuring the effectiveness and longevity of tobacco-free norms.
Our approach includes a variety of strategies: from hosting and participating in annual events for “anti-tobacco” holidays such as, the Great American Smoke-Out, Kick Butts Day, and World No Tobacco Day, to presenting to community boards and garnering earned media. We also create advocacy materials and disseminate information in community venues and with key community groups and partners across NYC. Collectively, our strategies serve to expand partnerships and build community support for tobacco free initiatives: Reduction of tobacco proliferation, marketing and advertising, Increasing smoke-free housing units and outdoor spaces, and reducing tobacco imagery in youth-rated movies and youth friendly internet sites.
NYC Smoke-Free works with community advocates, health and youth-focused organizations, and elected officials to promote a smoke-free city. Our successes would not be possible without their tremendous efforts and support.
