Smoke-Free Protections on World No Tobacco Day

NYCHA is Going Smoke-Free!

Written by Vanessa Yvon, Queens Reality Check Youth Engagement Manager

Established by the World Health Organization, WNTD has been observed annually on May 31st since 1987 worldwide. On this day advocates highlight the health effects and risks of tobacco use and exposure, as it remains the #1 cause of preventable death.

In celebration of World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), NYCHA and Public Health Solution’s NYC Smoke-Free program will be hosting a video screening highlighting smoke-free public housing and the implementation of the NYCHA’s smoke-free policy. The video, featuring a number of NYCHA residents and health advocacy professionals will debut just as we approach implementation of the 2017 rule by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requiring all public housing authorities be to smoke-free. The new policy will be life changing for the thousands of NYCHA community members who already struggle with housing challenges.

Following the screening, which will also be live streamed, there will be a discussion panel and audience Q&A in an effort to provide resources and further understanding of these new health protections.
